This is August here. Late afternoon strolls in the heat, checking for poppers and blackberries. I love August in a vacuum. It's one of my favourite months. Late summer is just so perfect - no flies, the sun a little more orange, the nights are cooler. But it means autumn is coming, and autumn brings early mornings and school lunches and digging out the sweaters and the slow, pretty slide into winter. And winter holds its own beauty but also its own challenges. But for now, it's August, and we will take advantage. Check out what my dear friend Heather Robinson has been up to this month.

It's been a while. At least as far as updating our blog circle - but we're still together, celebrating and mourning together, checking in, sharing news, asking advice. We've all been busy, and yet eventually we are drawn back to our little group and our shared love of freelensing. Just three simple portraits for you - but they emphasize the dreaminess of freelensing, the magic of that selective focus and blur, Ordinary made extraordinary. See you soon. Make sure not to miss Heather Robinson's post - she has a wee, sweet new family member to free lens.
heathermrobinsonphotography.com/2016/07/30/freelensing-july-3/ It's been a weird winter. I'm not complaining. I just don't ever remember a February with almost no snow. Last year at this time we had a good four feet on the ground. And here we are, exploring with our rubber boots on, puddle-jumping, walking into the field, on the paths, into the woods, and there isn't a single snowbank blocking our way. As a summer-lover, I am soaking up every single drop of it. We spent almost the whole day outside, and now all of us are going to bed with cold toes, ruddy cheeks, smoky hair, and happy faces.
Click on through to see what Melissa has been up to this month. Her work is always so intriguing - she loves breaking all of the rules and I love her for it! http://melissalazukaphotographs.com/journal/2016/2/25/free-lensing-circle-february Thoughts:
I am so happy to be starting another year with these insanely talented ladies in this blog circle. Do you know what else is insanely talented? Bacon. I mean, everyone knows it tastes good and the texture can be pretty much perfect. It makes your house smell like Easter and delicious smoky food. But it also fills your house with haze, which delights little children and adults alike, and makes for pretty photos. I'm starting the year with bacon. I think it's a good way to start. And when you're done looking at my bacon, head on over to Heather Robinson's blog and see what she has been freelensing this month. It'll be amazing as always: http://heathermrobinsonphotography.com/2016/01/25/freelensing-january/ This month has been a blur, a flurry of activity and cold air and non-stop coming and going. We snuck in a bit of time this afternoon before the sun went below the trees (at 3:30pm!!) to play with some cattail fluff. This is my November blur, my November flurries. Please click on this link and visit Melissa's November post. Her out-of-the-box work is worth it, plus probably a second and third look!
http://melissalazukaphotography.com/blog/2015/11/november-freelensing-circle Freelensing + fall - two of my favourite things rolled up in one. Add in some macro freelensing, a double exposure, a lucky walk with rain + sun, and a leaf storm, and you have my beautiful October, a haze of colour and wind and steamy breath. Next up is Melissa Lazuka with some absolutely breathtaking October freelensing + double exposure.
http://melissalazukaphotography.com/blog/2015/10/freelensing-circle-october We went to the fair and our expectations were not high. My eldest is as cautious as his mother and experiences the pull of fun rides + the fear of them being too much. My youngest is not crazy about crowds and is less crazy about not touching either me or her daddy. There appeared to be approximately one billion people at this tiny county fair, and after the first half hour of whining, clinging, food-begging, bathroom lines, and expensive tickets, I was ready to pack it in. Something changed. The crowds shifted a bit. We went inside a building to look at prize-winning vegetables and crafts and herbs. We bought snow cones and cotton candy. The kids tentatively went on a couple of rides. We bought candy apples and settled into the stands to watch the costumed horses. The kids relaxed and laughed and gleefully shouted out who they'd pick to win the contests. When we left, it was grey and cool and the lights were brighter and suddenly we didn't really want to go and decided the fair was actually rather nice. See you again next year, fair. Maybe I'll even get to free lens from the top of the ferris wheel. (Who am I kidding, I'll be trying to convince myself I won't die.) Click on through to the always amazing Heather Robinson to see what she's been seeing through her (detached) lens this month. http://heathermrobinsonphotography.com/2015/09/28/freelensing-september-2/ We packed our tiny old Civic until it was ready to burst and headed for the sea. A small campground, hiking, exploring, and the glorious Bay of Fundy - this is our kind of adventure. We cannot swing a trip to Disney or international exploration, but I feel my kids are rich anyway, from exploring old copper mines, from walking on the ocean floor, from bacon cooked on a camp stove and sticky buns from the road along the sea. This has been our summer. We have dropped everything as often as possible, to pick blueberries in a clear cut, find sea glass behind Water Street, explore the river bed. I've kept all of these photos from our camping trip in colour. Our summer has been painted in greens and blues and brilliant golds, and that's how I'll remember it. Next up in our blog circle is the always amazing Melissa. Her work combines freelensing with some other amazing techniques and I always feel so awed and inspired by her work. Check it out!
http://melissalazukaphotography.com/blog/2015/8/free-lensing-circle-september Our long winter is over, so here we celebrate, in the green and the blossoms, with our bare toes and laughter. Welcome, warmth. Next up in our blog circle is the always incredible Heather Robinson. Click through to see what Heather and our other freelensing photographers have been doing this month.
http://heathermrobinsonphotography.com/2015/05/24/freelensing-may-2/ We had a campfire in the sun. Your beautiful faces were there. I forget the rest. Now go check out Janielle from Lens & Beauty. These photos of her boys are magical.
